Most people I have contact with always say things like the following:
- I need a vacation.
- I need about two more hours in the day.
- I’m always tired.
- There is no end to this. It is always one thing after another.
- I can’t get a break.
Do these sound familiar? If so, I suspect you are a person who does not know how to stay focused. This post is the first in a series of posts in which I intend to give you keys to keeping the focus. These keys can be applied to any area of your life. The posts at the end of this series will focus on individual areas of your life to help you move toward being a holistically healthy person by applying these five keys.
Before I list the five keys, it is imperative for you to know the reason many people do not live focused lives is because of a lack of self-discipline. The modern American culture has created such a state that almost anything can be handed to us without much sacrifice. Parents hand toys, gadgets and screens to their children without teaching them how to work for it. Adults take out a loan to get whatever they want, whenever they want it. Such a lack of self-discipline has placed us on a crazy cycle of debt, fatigue, emotional distress, relational disharmony, and much more.
If you are living a life without self-discipline, you must answer the question, “Is it worth it?” Only you can answer this question for yourself. But here is my answer, “NO! It’s not worth it.”
Five Keys to Keeping the FOCUS
These will be unpacked in upcoming posts. But to start you thinking about them, here are the five keys to keeping focus in your life:
Faithfulness in every area of life. Faithfulness is not just showing up. It is showing up to do the right thing in the right way at the right time to gain the trust of those around you.
Obtainable Objectives & Goals. The greatest hindrance to making progress in your life is unobtainable objectives and goals. While you want to think big, sometimes you create mistakes your objectives for goals. This creates havoc.
Christ-like Character. You will not find this in the conventional wisdom of the experts today. However, it is the foundation of all of life. Nothing else written in this post or any post on this site matters apart from this one key.
Use the right tools. This may seem like a no-brainer. But, don’t underestimate the power of using the right tools to help you keep your focus.
Simplify your life. The most freeing thing you can do for yourself to be self-disciplined is to learn to effectively say “Yes” to the things that matter most and “No” to the things that are trivial or distracting to you.
Four Life Categories
The next five posts in this series are dedicated to breaking down each of these five characteristics. The goal is to help you put a system in place so that you can apply these to every area of your life. Ultimately, it will be up to you to determine what areas of your life you need to work on. Below is a list of broad categories of life that will be used in these posts to consider the possibilities of how you can live a life of focus.
- Spiritual Life. I am using this term at the broadest level. You are a spirit living in a body. Your spirit is your inner person. So, this includes your relationship with the God of the Bible, your thought life, emotions and your will.
- Physical Life. If you are a spirit living in a body, then your physical life is important too. It is the combination of your spirit and body that makes you a soul.
- Relational Life. Unless you are a hermit, you have relationships with the people who surround you. The number and type of relationships that you have is dependent upon the life you have chosen for yourself.
- Experiential Life. In other words, you do these things in life. It is your life’s experience. This includes work life, hobbies, financial life, etc.
